Weekly Update 7th July 2009

We have a few walk reports in one this week including a note from Anne Marie about her trip to the Tatras....

Damian's walk
Wednesdsay 24/06/2009 - North Face - Toor Mountain Range

On Wednesday 24th June while the 'Ultras' were trekking through some of the finest mountain rain of northern Europe, the 'Contras' (a far better bunch) took on a trek around the forests, hills and scrublands of Toor.

This walk clicks into parts of the Slieve Felim way, though the 1st hour of the walk is on road and track and the last is across open very rough scrub to great viewing points. It was a great evening out and finished in plenty of time for a cosy-up in Carey's saloon in Toor afterwards where we were well looked after.

Walk Statistics: Contras: 37

Well done all!

Ann Marie's Club Trip to Poland :

Dear All,

Club Trip to the Polish Tatra mountains June 20th-27th 2009

Our recent trip to Poland went very well, with most people coming back exhausted . Overall it was an enjoyable experience with all 26 people, walking at various levels, and lengths of days!. Five days walking between the Western and High Tatra mountains. Walks were lead by our guides, Jaro, and Donna ,and special thanks to Mick Wall, for leading a third group.

Weather conditions were overall very poor, which was disappointing, however we did catch glimpses of the stunning views .

Accommodation was in Villa Kurant, in Zakopan , two nights in mountain huts which definitely challenged some of us, and supreme luxury with the four star hotel in Krakow. People did various things in Krakow which was a lovely finish to the trip.

My good wished to Catherine for a speedy recovery.

I would like to thank all those who came and make the trip very memorable.

For further details. Ask me in South's!!

Regards,

Ann Marie

Denis O'Connor's walk
Wednesday 1st July 2009, Mullaghmore, the Burren.

Hi All,

On Wednesday last July 1st, 28 of us had a very enjoyable walk in the Mullaghmore area of the Burren. The walk began at 7.20pm. At that stage it looked as if it might rain but thankfully it held off and it remained a warm an humid evening. The summit of Mullaghmore, 204m, was reached at 8pm and we stopped there for some refreshments and also to admire the stunning views of the Burren landscape. From Mullaghmore we travelled north to Slive Roe and then to another unnamed hill. Having backtracked to Mullaghmore, we descended along its western end. The walk lasted 3hrs 5 mins and we covered a distance of 7.5km in total. The pace was leisurely and there was plenty of time to admire the flora and faun, Fr .Ted's house and attempt (unsuccessful) to find the round tower of Kilmacduagh in the distance. After the walk, a good number of the group adjourned to Bofey Quinn's in Corofin, where we were entertained by traditional musicians and singers. A big thank you to Fergus, Ger, Denis, Joe OMeara and Joe Walsh, who all helped to make the walk so enjoyable and well done to all the new members who did so well.

Kind Regards,

Denis OConnor.

Tomorrow evening 8th July, I will be leading a very easy walk (about two and three quarter hours), at an easy pace, with lost of stops, on Sl Felim.
Meeting at the Monument at Murrow at 6.30 p.m.

Mick Wall will be leading a walk next Sunday, 12th July to Mangerton Mountain. This is a 5 hour moderate walk, meeting at South Court Hotel at 11 a.m.

The names are rolling in for the Barbeque, so don't forget to get yours down too.
